يبدو أن المآتم الحسينية العلنية والمواكب أيضاً قد بدأت في العراق في وقت مبكر في زمن الدولة العثمانية. فعلى ذمة د. علي الوردي الذي ينقل عن المؤرخ عبد الرزاق الحسني : " فلما حلّ شهر محرم في السنة التالية، وكان ذلك في 21 أيار 1832م، أقامت إحدى الاسر الشيعية مجلساً للتعزية في دارها وقد حضره الوالي فعلا ، فكان ذلك تشجيعاً لغيرها للإقتداء بها ، ومنذ ذلك الحين أخذت مجالس التعزية تنمو وتنتشر في كل مكان..." انتهى .
وأما عن المواكب فيقول د. الوردي انه في نفس الوقت الذي انتشرت فيه المجالس، أخذت مواكب اللطم بالانتشار ايضا. وأول موكب خرج كان للشيخ باقر بن الشيخ أسد الله في الكاظمية، ومن بعده انتشرت المواكب كالمجالس....
It seems that public Husseini commemorations (Majalis) and processions (Mawakib) started early in Iraq during the Ottoman era.
According to Dr. Ali al-Wardi, who quotes the historian Abdul Razzaq al-Hasani: 'When the month of Muharram arrived the following year, which was on May 21, 1832, a Shiite family held a mourning gathering in their home. The governor actually attended it, which encouraged others to follow their example. Since then, these mourning gatherings began to grow and spread everywhere...' End of quote.
As for the processions, Dr. Al-Wardi says that at the same time the gatherings spread, the chest-beating processions (Latm) also began to spread. The first procession that went out was for Sheikh Baqir bin Sheikh Asadullah in Al-Kadhimiya. After that, processions spread just like the gatherings did.
