It appears that during the 8th century AH / 14th century CE, the Shia sect was widespread along the Lebanese coast, particularly in Beirut, Sidon, and their dependencies. This is evidenced by a Mamluk decree and mandate cited by the historian Al-Qalqashandi in his book Subh al-A'sha in the year 764 AH / 1363 CE. The decree warns the Shia in Beirut and its suburbs, Sidon and its surroundings, as well as their affiliated districts, farms, and villages, against adopting the Shia creed, and threatens them with the Mamluk army if they do not renounce their beliefs.
